On Saturday, May 17, 2025, as part of the Open Doors event, we presented the 11th publication of the “By Word of Mouth” series—an ongoing tribute to the village of Epanomi.

Following on from the previous publication on old private residences, we moved on to buildings important to the community and its people. Churches and chapels, schools, the mill, the old abattoirs, the cemeteries, the stadium and other emblematic buildings form six routes, inviting the reader on a tour.

The research focuses on the village’s center and includes buildings up to the time when Epanomi transitioned from a Community to a Municipality. From the mid-1990s onwards, this administrative change brought new infrastructure that changed the pedestrians' and cars' mobility and circulation, while public and private reconstruction grew significantly.

As with every publication, contemporary photography plays a central role. This year’s images were captured once again by Stergios Karavatos, in collaboration with architect Eleni Kyriakidou, who conducted the architectural documentation. The publication also draws from the work of scholars closely tied to the region, such as Theocharis Pazaras, as well as local researchers with deep affection for Epanomi (Tsaknakis, Papachristou, among others). Residents’ stories and photographs from personal archives added depth and intimacy. The texts were written and edited by archaeologist Thaleia Akrivopoulou.

We hope this publication invites readers to walk through Epanomi, to understand it and see it through a new perspective that respects the past and inspires the present.

By Word of Mouth – The Community of Epanomi, Buildings and Routes”, like all Ktima Gerovassiliou publications, is available at the Wine Museum café shop and through our e-shop.
